This article is about how to increase your workload. If you’re happy with the amount you work, but would like to increase your hourly rate, please see this article.
Firstly, we think it’s great that our editors like working with Unbabel so much that they’re looking for new ways to earn money with us. As this is quite a broad question, it’s best split into two sections: (a) getting more work as an editor and (b) other income streams with us.
- Getting more work as an editor
Let’s be really clear: there’s no magic formula for how to work more with us. Some language pairs have naturally low volumes, and others have huge spikes at certain times. The truth about the sort of markets we work with is that there is no such thing as a stable workload - part of what makes our service so valuable to our clients is that we’re able to meet their needs in a very short turnaround time. We also always endeavour to inform our communities of editors about any changes to volumes, and make sure there’s enough work to go around.
The fact is that we have very tight turnaround times for what we do, and if there is constant work available at the platform 24 hours a day then the chances are our turnaround times might not be being met, and we will likely be recruiting new editors for that language in the near future. Conversely, for language pairs with very little demand, we’ll be working to find new work to ensure you’re not left out of pocket.
There are some things that you can do to maximise your chances of receiving work on the platform:
- Check the platform multiple times a day, at different times of the day.
Sometimes we recruit editors not because we’re having problems with the number of editors available overall, but just the number of editors available to work at certain times of the day. This means that you might easily be able to find more work stepping out of your comfort zone.
- Check to see if we’re looking for any new editors in other language pairs.
Our capacities vary across language pairs. This means that if you’re not getting as much in one language pair, but have a different combination you’d like to try, it’s worth seeing if we’re open for registrations.
To do this, log out and go to unbabel.com/translators, then begin a new registration. You’ll be able to see which languages we’re looking for at the moment. If you can see your language pair there, please contact us at support so we can add it for you.
If you can’t see your language there, it’s because we’re not accepting new registrations, nor can we add the language pair in question to an existing account. Whilst you’re welcome to contact us to see if we have available places, especially if you have been with us a long time and are a valued contributor, it’s probably that we will have to say no. See this article for more information.
(b) Other income streams with us
We’re always looking for talented people to come and work with us on a more permanent basis.
If you’re a qualified linguist and have extensive translation experience, you could have a place with us as a terminologist, annotator or evaluator. Find out more here.
Interested in language and have experience in another field? We’re hiring for a range of positions globally - check out our vacancies at unbabel.com/careers.
